Watch your Thoughts
'We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we need to be really happy, is something to be enthusiastic about.'
Charles Kingsley
Think about someone you know who seems unhappy. Do you sometimes think they may just need an interest, to divert and consume their thinking and energy? If so, your thoughts are aligned with the quote above. Now think of someone who is truly happy. Ask what they might be enthusiastic about – it will show in their attitude to life, their thoughts, their words, their behaviour, their gratitude and their ready smile.
It is so easy to feel in the doldrums; some people rarely seem to emerge from them, the 'Woe is me' syndrome. 'It’s always someone else’s fault, if only this had happened, then that would happen…'; 'When I get rich, when I find love…then everything will be just fine…'
We all tell ourselves stories and very often those stories become our reality: 'My parents were divorced, therefore I can never have a fulfilling relationship.' You get the picture. The story creates the thoughts and the emotion. These thoughts become our words and our reality. However, we CAN change our story, we can retell it to ourselves, thereby creating a different mind space for ourselves to move forward positively with enthusiasm, motivation and focus – with purpose. It may well take us out of our comfort zone, it may feel a little risky, we may have to commit to a course of action that will change our life and those around us and these are scary thoughts.
We can all think of a dozen reasons NOT to do something, even if we deep inside feel compelled to do it, passionate about it. We play the 'What If' game. Let me encourage you to play 'What If' the positive way round!
Think of one GOOD reason to do whatever it is that you really want to do. Then another, then think of the best reason and then WRITE THEM DOWN – all the compelling reasons for pursuing this passion. Write down the benefits, not just for you, but for everyone you will touch with the 'new you'.
NOW play the 'What If' game. What if it all works out for the best? If it were better than imagined? What would life be like, and the lives of others – if you really did do this thing you are shying away from?
Life is fragile, life is short. Do not take life for granted and watch your thoughts, they have often become so ingrained that we do not recognise them for what they are – our story, habit. So watch your thoughts for your thoughts become your emotions and words. These words in turn become your actions; actions become habit and habit becomes your character. Watch your character for it becomes your destiny.
Live life with an 'attitude of gratitude', be thankful for what you have, don’t dwell on what you don’t have. Practice this every morning when you get up – it really does work!
Most people want things to be different, they’re just not willing to change. Are you?
