Stress -  time to slow down

‘What sort of life we live if, full of stress and care.
We have no time to stand and stare’

Stress – a word much used and abused in the English language. How often do we utter, ‘I’m so stressed’, sometimes almost wearing the fact that we feel like this nearly all the time like a badge of honour?

The world’s fastest nations are also the fattest and most stressed. So how can being in this state permanently be good for us? Stop and think for a moment about the stressful lives we all seem to live. Never stopping, never time to pause and think, to look around at and to appreciate the wonderful things in life, almost all of which are completely free.

I've never heard of anyone on their deathbed who said, ‘I wish I'd spent more time at the office’, in fact it is always the opposite. People talk with longing and sadness about the lack of time they spent with loved ones, the holidays they didn’t take, the things they didn’t do, usually because they were too busy being busy and stressed…

We go faster and faster, aided and abetted by technology which purports to make life easier for us. Wrong! It makes life faster for us, so we can communicate even more, and often unnecessarily. The server goes down for half an hour and you’re climbing the walls because you’re expecting THAT email, or you can’t get on the internet…

Going faster and faster usually ends up in non-achievement. By going slower you can actually achieve and achieve with quality. Speed generates quantity, slowing down produces quality.

I gave up wearing a watch about two years ago as both my watchstraps had broken. As someone who was obsessive about time, this felt like a minor disaster! At first I couldn’t stop glancing at my left wrist and felt like I’d had a limb removed! After a surprisingly short time (about a week) I didn’t even notice it wasn’t there, and secondly, and astonishingly, my time keeping, which had always been good, became even better! I was no longer obsessing about time, I inherently just knew what the time was and my gut instincts told me to be where I had to be – on time! I feel much more relaxed about time now, feel far less stressed and all because I took my watch off!

Speed and stress in our modern times can become an addiction, an addiction which does not serve us. Keep empty space in your diary, to allow things to just happen. Take your watch off, prioritise what and who is REALLY important in life and make inroads to changing your lifestyle. Make the time to take action and to do something positive to demonstrate and express what you really want from life. Remember, life is not a rehearsal! Do it now (and I mean now) or lose the opportunity for ever - time to slow down!.
